چکیده

This paper is the final part in a series of four on the dynamics of two coupled, parametrically driven pendulums. In the previous three parts (Banning and van der Weele, Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums; the Hamiltonian case, Physica A 220 (1995) 485-533; Banning et al., Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums; the dissipative case, Physica A 245 (1997) l 1-48; Banning et al., Mode competition in a system of two parametrically driven pendulums with nonlinear coupling, Physica A 245 (1997) 49-98) we have given a detailed survey of the different oscillations in the system, with particular emphasis on mode interaction. In the present paper we use group theory to highlight the role of symmetry. It is shown how certain symmetries can obstruct period doubling and Hopf bifurcations; the associated routes to chaos cannot proceed until these symmetries have been broken. The symmetry approach also reveals the general mechanism of mode interaction and enables a useful comparison with other systems.

Control and characterization of spatio-temporal disorder in parametrically excited surface waves

The nonlinear interactions of parametrically excited surface waves have been shown to yield a rich family of nonlinear states. When the system is driven by two commensurate frequencies, a variety of interesting superlattice type states are generated via a number of different 3-wave resonant interactions. These states occur either as symmetrybreaking bifurcations of hexagonal patterns composed o...

Stability Analysis in Parametrically Excited Electrostatic Torsional Micro-actuators

This paper addresses the static and dynamic stabilities of a parametrically excited torsional micro-actuator. The system is composed of a rectangular micro-mirror symmetrically suspended between two electrodes and acted upon by a steady (dc ) while simultaneously superimposed to an (ac ) voltage. First, the stability of the system subjected to a quasi-statically applied (dc ) voltage is investi...

CONTROL OF CHAOS IN A DRIVEN NON LINEAR DYNAMICAL SYSTEM

We present a numerical study of a one-dimensional version of the Burridge-Knopoff model [16] of N-site chain of spring-blocks with stick-slip dynamics. Our numerical analysis and computer simulations lead to a set of different results corresponding to different boundary conditions. It is shown that we can convert a chaotic behaviour system to a highly ordered and periodic behaviour by making on...

Heteroclinic dynamics in the nonlocal parametrically driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Faraday waves are described, under appropriate conditions, by a damped nonlocal parametrically driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation. As the strength of the applied forcing increases this equation undergoes a sequence of transitions to chaotic dynamics. The origin of these transitions is explained using a careful study of a two-mode Galerkin truncation and linked to the presence of heteroclinic...

Tunable Defect Mode in One-Dimensional Ternary Nanophotonic Crystal with Mirror Symmetry

In this paper, the properties of the defect mode in the photonic band gap ofone-dimensional ternary photonic crystals containing high temperature superconductorlayer (SPCs) have been theoretically investigated. We considered the quasi-periodiclayered structures by choosing two order of ternary Thue-Morse structures with mirrorsymmetry. We investigated the transmission spectra of these structure...
